FOOD POLICY
Background and Introduction:
Scarsdale Synagogue’s dietary policy was re-evaluated in 2016 and 2018 by a Board-appointed task force made up of clergy, staff, and a cross-section of congregational membership. After studying for several months with our clergy about traditional Jewish dietary practices, the history of kashrut in American Reform Judaism, and the variety of contemporary values that might inform a contemporary progressive Jewish food ethic, our team recommended (and the Board subsequently approved) the following dietary policies. Our approach is informed by a deep desire to form sacred community over shared meals, to be inclusive of the range of dietary choices and needs that our members navigate today, to affirm the critical Jewish value of briut (health) with regards to food allergens, and to respect members’ dietary autonomy particularly when they use the synagogue building for private functions.
Our clergy and Executive Director are always available to answer any questions about the policy that you might have. Thank you for your interest.
